Resilient Georgia Marks 5th Year of Statewide Mental Health Coordination
Resilient Georgia was created with an ambitious mission five years ago: To lead a state-wide coalition to develop a closely-aligned and trauma-informed public and private network working toward a united vision to create a birth through 26-year-old integrated behavioral health system.
Since then, Georgia has improved to ranking 5th out of 51 states for youth ranking measures, such as lower instances of substance use disorder, decreased suicidal thoughts and expanded access to mental health services.
“Over the past five years, we have continued to build and strengthen innovative private/public partnerships, improve behavioral health in Georgia, and make Georgia a trauma-informed state for the sake of our children and families,” said Emily Anne Vall, Executive Director, Resilient Georgia.
The work of their 16 regional coalitions and more than 900 partners statewide is helping create a more resilient Georgia every day.
“These 16 regional coalitions across 120 counties are deeply engaged in their work to reduce mental health stigma, prevent and heal childhood adversity, emphasize trauma-informed awareness and care, and promote resilience in children and their families,” said Audrey Idaikkadar, Director of Regional Programs, Resilient Georgia.
According to the 2024 State of Mental Health in America Report, Georgia ranks #1 nationally for kids 6-17 yrs "flourishing," a new measure for this year. Flourishing is determined as a positive indicator of mental health and wellbeing by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The criteria for flourishing were designed to assess children and adolescents’ learning, resilience, and self-regulation. Youth who were flourishing were those who always or usually showed interest and curiosity in learning new things, work to finish tasks they started, and stayed calm and in control when faced with a challenge. Rates of flourishing are associated with school engagement and other positive outcomes for youth.
Resilient Georgia is made up of a network of diverse, robust and well-planned public/private partnerships with a regional behavioral health focus. The organization also leads innovative, statewide efforts around building a trauma-informed workforce and mental health advocacy.
“Together, we will continue working towards a future where every child in Georgia grows up to be a resilient adult, supported by a culture of prevention, healing, and trauma-informed care,” said Vall. “Today, we reach 120 of Georgia’s 159 counties with a goal to cover every county in Georgia through innovative private/public partnerships.”
